Prosthetic's with a Sense of Touch

Do you or anybody you know have a prosthetic? If not, imagine losing a limb or being born without one and not being able to feel anything. Soon, with the help of European engineers, professors, and scientists you won't have to worry anymore. Prosthetic's with a sense of touch are being worked on in Switzerland and Italy. The European engineers, professors, and scientists are already working on this particular invention and within no time they will be used all over the world. In 2013, patient Dennis Aabo Sorensen had the opportunity to test the new prosthetic on his hand. Many electrodes were placed inside of Dennis' nerves where his hand was amputated. The electrodes connect to the prosthetic. These electrodes send waves throughout the body into the brain. The prosthetic is supposed to give him a sense of touch and control throughout his hand. The prosthetic allows the patient to feel pressure, determine each object by touch, and be able to grab or hold objects depending where the prosthetic is. However, the invention is still in the process of being created, this means it still has a long way to go till it is 100% ready for use, but in Sorensen's case it worked.

This invention will better humanity. First of all, it will make humans with prosthetic's, feel better about themselves and want to do more because they can feel again. Secondly, if the person with the prosthetic had an important job such as a surgeon, they would be able to pursue that job again because they can feel, and they would be able to saves lots of lives. Lastly, patients with the prosthetic would be able to bond over this accomplishment and talk to each other about how it personally helps them. In addition, the main professor, Silvestro Micera, believes that the better understanding in the fields of neuroscience, neurology, and geriatrics means the better development of clinical solutions.

This invention could have both pros and cons. The pros could better the scientists, engineers, and professors and their research. They pros could also better humans and how we live. Also, the prosthetic's could work and amaze people all over the world by letting them feel again. However, there could also be cons and the invention might not work 100% as planned. If the invention doesn't work then people all over the world will be very disappointed and will definitely never be able to feel again. Another way it could be bad, would be because the electrons could end up being very dangerous especially when they are put in the wrong spot. This could also be bad if the electrodes aren't working correctly and are inside the nerves sending bad electronic waves to the brain. If this invention goes as planned it could change lots of peoples lives. It would better people with prosthetic's lives or anyone around them, such as family and friends.

The Renaissance was the invention time period and so many inventions were created during that time. This new invention is just like the invention of medicine, such as ibuprofen, during the Renaissance. Medicine helped certain individuals all around the world just like this new prosthetic will. Medicine and prosthetic's with a sense of touch would both be used to better our understanding of the human body and how it works. That means that these products would both better the scientific world. These inventions would also both better humans as a whole. They would make us feel better when we are sick or give us the ability to do things we wouldn't be able to normally do. Overall, I think that prosthetic's with a sense of touch will better the world.

  1. Due to the nature of the electrodes being able to connect to nerves within your body do you think that there is a possibility that the technology could one day be used not only to recreate limbs that were lost but create new ones entirely? Something like an extra eyeball on the back of your head perhaps.

    1. Maybe in the future scientists will be able to create entirely new limbs, but for now they are focusing on rebuilding the feeling in limbs lost.

  2. You said that prosthetic's with a sense of touch are being developed in Switzerland and Italy, but will they be used all around the world like in the United States or just in Europe?

    1. Prosthetic's with a sense of touch are being created in Europe, mainly Italy and Switzerland, but that doesn't mean they will just be used in Europe. They will be used all over the world, so they can help those in need.

  3. Would they reconnect the limb that the person lost or attach a donor's? Do you know the group working on this?

    1. They would connect a prosthetic to nerves where the limb was, not connect a donor or re-attach the original limb. The European professors, engineers, and scientists aren't necessarily a group of people, it is more like a laboratory that a group of people work at, which is called the TNE Lab, the Translational Neural Engineering Laboratory.
